The 2024 Aston Martin DB12 is the World’s First “Super Tourer”

Officially unveiled yesterday, the Aston Martin DB12 is the next vehicle in line to progress the legacy of Aston Martin. With a meager starting price of only $245,000 (gulp), many are asking, “Is this car worth the money?” Well, judging by the giddy and enamored looks on everyone’s faces who had the privilege of driving one at the launch event, I think it is.

Members of the Aston Martin marketing team have said the DB12 is too good to be called a supercar and too good to be called a grand tourer. So, what is it? The world’s first Super Tourer.

Marketing gimmicks aside, this vehicle certainly does bestow characteristics of both an amazing GT car and produces supercar numbers thanks to some engineering tweaks of its’ powertrain.

Power Numbers

The DB12 comes standard with a twin-turbo V8 that produces a whopping 671 horsepower. It will launch you from 0-60mpg in a staggering 3.6 seconds. It is also a few hundred pounds lighter than its competitors like the Bentley Continental GT. The DB12 has a top speed of 202mph.

What’s Different from the DB11?

Aside from way more power, the DB12 has made some other significant changes over its predecessor. The wide array of drive modes allows you to go from a violent, growling projectile of a car to a plush, comforting ride that soaks up uneven road surfaces.

The interior has been updated to make the rather hefty asking price a bit more understandable. The leathers and surface materials look astoundingly plush and luxurious, which the DB11 wasn’t known for. The fit and finish seem to be a step up as well.

Lastly, the infotainment screen has been implemented into the center stack rather than stuck on top as an afterthought. The screen responsive appears to be significantly improved as well.

Aston Martin DB12 Shortcomings

The DB12, while vastly improved over theDB11, is not perfect. The main complaint that I’ve heard is that the steering is a bit too light, even in the most aggressive drive modes. I think this is more a product of the generation than a design flaw. I find that many people prefer lighter steering, especially in luxury cars.

Final Thoughts

Despite the very few criticisms, the Aston Martin DB12 appears to be an absolute gem of a vehicle. It has created a brand-new class of vehicle that I think may actually catch on, especially in the extreme luxury markets. I hope to one day take one of these twin-turbo V8 beasts for a spin. But until then I will have to quietly admire them from the comfort of my living room.
