2024 Hyundai Sonata Receives a Stunning Redesign

The current generation of Hyundai Sonata, while still a very popular full-size sedan option for many families across the USA, was not-so-lovingly accepted when it was released. It quickly became known as the “catfish car” due to its distinct front bumper design. The DRL’s and chrome trim makes it look like it has catfish whiskers.

I have a soft spot for Hyundai, especially for the Sonata. My first car was a 2013 Hyundi Sonata and it got me through nearly 10 years of issue-free driving through college and the early years of my career.

2024 Hyundai Sonata Powertrain Options

The current generation Sonata has four powertrain options. These include a 191-hp 2.5L MPI/GDI 4-cylinder engine, a 180-hp 1.6L Turbo GDI 4-cylinder engine, 192-hp gas/electric combined for the hybrid model, and a 290-hp 2.5L Turbo MPI/GDI 4-cylinder engine in the N-Line trim. The 1.6L turbo is the same engine that is in the higher trims of the Hyundai Kona which I used to own, as well. I have not had the pleasure of driving the N-Line, but the other two engine options are quite nice to drive, and I had no reliability issues with either.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata is poised to keep the same powertrain options as the current generation. Although, I have heard rumors of it losing the 1.6t engine option.

2024 Hyundai Sonata First Looks

On the exterior, the 2024 Hyundai Sonata adopts the new Hyundai signature look. The look being this gigantic horizontal light bar across the entire front fascia. It looks very similar to the design language in the redesigned 2024 Hyundai Kona. While this new design language won’t be on every single new Hyundai model such as the new Hyundai Santa Fe, it’s certainly welcome on a few models.

The rear end of the new 2024 Sonata will also see a full length horizontal light bar for taillights.

The interior has also been extensively refreshed, and while we don’t have specifics yet, it looks amazing. Hyundai and Kia both do a tremendous job with their interiors. For the MSRP they ask, you get a true luxury bargain compared to their competitors.

It looks like we will also see a new gauge cluster and infotainment display.

2024 Hyundai Sonata Driving Impressions

While it will still be a while before we can test drive the new Sonata in the USA, our good friends in South Korea have us covered.

The overall driving dynamics of the 2024 Sonata really should be no different than the current generation. That means you can expect a calm, comfortable, supple driving experience, with ample amounts of luxury.

However, the new Sonata N-Line is looking quite menacing with its’ quad exhaust tips and aggressive styling. I’m very excited to give that a test drive when they come stateside.
